Talking Points

Talking Points

Below you will find all of the unique Talking points for each of the groups as well as their own Assignments.

Group 1: Energy Independence vs. International Cooperation

Conflict: As many other countries in Europe Germany is dependant on imported energy, as well as Russian Gas. In times of international conflict and shifts in the world of politics seeking more energy independance.

Change: Transition to be more independent in access to energy, and at the same time address the green transition and be a part of the European power grid.

Assignment:

Adress the challenges and benefits of the European power grid («world’s largest machine»). Different countries might have different perspectives on this. Also include your finds to the green transition.

Group 1: Energy Independence vs. International Cooperation

  1. How does the European power grid impact national energy security?
  2. What are the risks and benefits of relying on international energy agreements?
  3. How does the green transition affect national energy policies?
  4. Should countries prioritize self-sufficiency or remain interconnected?
  5. What role does renewable energy play in balancing independence and cooperation?
  6. How do geopolitical events shape energy cooperation?
  7. What technologies can enhance energy independence?
  8. What lessons can be learned from past energy crises?
  9. How does energy policy impact economic growth?

What trade-offs exist between energy independence and environmental goals?

Group 2: Fossil Fuel Economy vs. Green Transition

Conflict: Norway’s heavy reliance on oil and gas exports and the global push for renewable energy.

Change: Balancing economic stability and being an important provider of energy to the European market through fossil fuel, and at the same time being part of the transition to a green economy.

Assignment:

What are the plans and strategy defined through the Paris agreement and UN Sustainability goals concerning the green transition? What are the challenges connected to phasing out fossil fuel?

Conflict: Spain is one of the countries in Europe debating to phase out nuclear energy, at the same time as last few years has proven the importance of a stable and secure access to energy.

Change: Balancing the role of nuclear power in Europe’s energy mix as the continent shifts to renewables and greener energy.

Research Focus:

Arguments for and against nuclear energy Europe, also taking into consideration new technology for nuclear power plants (small modular reactors compared to the traditional of today).
